NOTE: ACU is the host university for and site of the Region I-AAA academic contests, but is not the actual site of the One-Act Play contest. The Clyde High School campus is the site for this contest, and is located off I-20, south, on the southwest side of the city of Clyde.

To find your way around campus, print out a Clyde High School campus map. The NHPAC is located on the southwest corner of the CHS campus, across from the softball field. Please park in the ag building parking lot, west of the NHPAC, unless directed differently.  (Auditorium Logistics and Facilities)

The contest manager has a stage diagram, lights plot, and pictures of the boards, as well as views of the house and exterior of the building, including the loading dock.

DIRECTORS MEETING:  Zoom Meeting on Tuesday, April 13, at 4:00.

(Information and invitations will be emailed to directors and judges by April 9.)

Procedures on each day of the contest Wednesday, April 14, and Thursday, April 15, 2021:

·           (Please read this and refer to the schedule chart below.  We must follow the schedule precisely, in order to maintain the critical time constraints.)

·           Face coverings (masks or shields) must be worn by everyone at all times.  The exception is that masks are not required of actors ONSTAGE in the rehearsal or performance.

·           Companies arrive at Clyde High School no earlier than 15 minutes prior to your scheduled rehearsal time, in costume and stage makeup. No dressing room will be available, but restrooms will be available for quick touchups. Please do not enter the building upon arrival--the contest manager (Bobby Robinson) or Stage Manager (Cody Propps or Bre Marquis) will meet you at your bus and direct you into the loading dock. Except for lobby restrooms, visiting schools will not be allowed into any other part of the building during your visit to CHS.

·           No hospitality room will be provided.

·           The large parking lot immediately to the southwest is for temporary bus parking.

·           All props and set pieces will be brought through big door of the loading dock.  Please note that to keep us on a good schedule, you will have only 15 minutes to load in and begin rehearsal.

·           Each company will unload to the center of the stage.  Cody or Bre will immediately start your rehearsal. At the end of your 50-minute rehearsal, do not strike, but leave your stage set. There will be about a 7-minute set “to the start of show.”  (See the schedule, below.)

·           After the performance, you will strike out the side door, near--but not blocking--the big door you loaded in, earlier.  Please have your bus and/or trailer ready to load, but NOT in the loading dock area. Set pieces too large for a regular-sized door can be carried out the big door, of course.  Everything should be carried outside and then loaded in your bus or trailer—or onto the grass surface— as quickly as possible. Get back in to the critique area in the rear of the auditorium. Your bus/trailer need(s) to be moved immediately, because the next school is coming directly behind you, and we have to clean when you leave. Please be aware you’re only being given 15 minutes to load out.  You don’t have to have it loaded before your critique.

·           AUDIENCES:  Audiences will be allowed, with admission to be $10 for adults and $5 for students—good for all four shows on that particular day—not for both days. Please don’t present a bill larger than a $20 bill.  Unless we tell you differently, we won’t have tickets, but the “honor system” will prevail.  Contest participants, bus drivers, and directors will not have to pay.  No passes, please.  All outside doors will remain locked all day and attendees (audience members) will be allowed in the south door (clearly marked) 20 minutes prior to the beginning of the first show, and each show, that day.  They will wait to be directed to enter the auditorium doors 10 minutes prior to the beginning of the show, as indicated above and below.  PleaAfter the performance has ended, the audience will have to leave the house.  We’re not sure how it will work, but we do know that audiences can’t watch the rehearsals.  According to CDC and UIL guidelines, along with Clyde ISD protocols, masks must be worn at all times by all participants and visitors—except by performers onstage.  We’re not so naïve as to expect everyone to follow the rules, but we have to ask you to do so, for the health and well-being of all of the rest of us.

T.T.A.O. Adjudicating Panel:

A)  LYDIA MILLER-WYATT – Wimberley –  West Texas State University (now WTAMU)

Lydia was an educator and OAP director for 30+ years, and has had 12 State OAP appearances, including two State Championships.  She has been recipient of the UIL Sponsor Award, and is a member of the West Texas A&M Branding Iron Theatre Hall of Fame.  Lydia was co-founder and co-director of Shakespeare Under the Stars for 14 years.  She has presented various workshops for TETA, UIL SuperConference, UIL Capital Conference, and National Council of Teachers of English. Lydia believes that theatre is a valuable and important addition to a student's education, and says, “I try to further that education.”

B)  DENISE VERNER GREEN – Fritch – West Texas A & M University, Canyon, Texas

Denise began her involvement in One-Act play while in high school.  She retired after thirty years as UIL coordinator, speech/debate coach, and theatre director at Boys Ranch High School and West Texas High School in Stinnett.  She and her students competed in conferences A, AA, and AAA, and advanced to the One-Act Play State Meet fifteen times and won four State Championships during those years.  Denise now enjoys watching students grow and become successful adults through their participation in the performing arts.

C)  RAY NEWBURG – Amarillo – Amarillo College, Texas Wesleyan University, Tulane University

Ray’s OAP experience started as a high school student at Amarillo High School where, in 1988, he performed with the company of “Peer Gynt” that advanced to the State contest.  OAP has been in his blood, ever since.  After completing his B.A. at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth and his M.F.A. at Tulane University in New Orleans, Ray worked with the New Orleans Opera Association as a scenic artist.  He taught theatre at the University of Texas at Arlington, Texas Wesleyan University, and Tarrant County College in Arlington.  In addition, Ray freelanced for several popular Metroplex theatres and has performed in stage events in Amarillo and Tarrant County.  An Amarillo College Theatre Arts alumnus (’90), Ray eventually moved home to Amarillo, and is a current faculty member.  He previously served as the Region 6 Texas Chair for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. In 2004, he received the TETA Teacher of the Year Award for Community Colleges.  He certified as an adjudicator in 2000, and has contest managed over forty and judged over seventy OAP contests all over the state, ranging from Zone to Region levels.  Ray believes in UIL OAP as a guiding force in this state, and he is proud to be a part of so many students' theatre education.

CRITIQUES:  At the conclusion of each play, and after finishing evaluations, adjudicators will draw to determine which of them will critique that play. Critiques will be held in the rear section of the auditorium.  Those interested may attend.  Continue to wear masks.

AWARDS:   The awards program will be conducted via a Zoom meeting after the final placements have been determined through the judges’ ballots and the T.T.A.O. web-based Tabulation Tool—about 7:00 p.m., Thursday.

To Join Zoom Awards Ceremony:   (Participation information will be provided, later.)

Scripts and music logs will be returned at the critiques.

Judges’ Evaluation Sheets and Panel ranking sheets will be emailed to the directors following the Zoom awards ceremony.  Please bring an 8 ½ X 11-inch stamped self-addressed envelope for that purpose.

A complete contest report, including individual awards, will be emailed to directors, judges, and administrators on the next day, if all email addresses are provided to the contest director.
