How many students are participating in Summer Scholars?
Space is limited to a maximum of 16 high school students from across the United States. ACU will accompany 12-16 students during Summer Scholars.
Who is leading Summer Scholars?
Summer Scholars will be lead by Dr. Tamara Long, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Dr. Susan Lewis, Vice Provost and Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication. There will be additional ACU faculty and staff in England for the Oxford campus grand opening that Summer Scholars will have the opportunity to get to know.
When is Summer Scholars?
Summer Scholars is July 12-18, 2020.
What college credit will I earn?
Students will experience a unique learning environment and receive 1 hour of college credit for JMC 140 Special Topics: Issues in Global Communication.
Where will I stay?
ACU Summer Scholars, faculty, and staff will be staying in world-class hotels in London and Oxford, England. Each student will be assigned a room with one roommate. All accommodation details will be made aware to parents prior to Summer Scholars.
How much does Summer Scholars cost?
The fee for Summer Scholars is $500 per student. This covers course fees, airfare, lodging, meals and excursions. A generous donor is covering the majority of the cost of Summer Scholars.
Students will be responsible for the following additional costs: required textbooks ($100), souvenirs and snacks.
What landmarks and excursions are included?
A few highlights of the trip will include:
Tower of London
The British Museum
Attend a show in the West End, London’s theatre district
Historic sites in Oxford’s medieval center
Attend the grand opening of ACU’s new Oxford campus
Can my parents come to Summer Scholars?
Parents and families are not permitted to travel with the ACU group, but could travel concurrently and a summer scholar can book returning flight differently to extend their stay with family.
I am not from Texas. When will I meet up with the ACU group?
We will fly as a group from DFW International Airport to London Heathrow Airport on July 12. If you live out-of-state, we will fly you to DFW the morning of July 12 to join the group.
Student must be a current high school Sophomore or Junior
Submit a Letter of Recommendation completed by current high school teacher or administrator
The application and recommendation letter must be submitted by April 10 to be considered. Due to demand we cannot accept late applications.
When will I find out if I am accepted?
Students will be notified on April 15 if they are accepted into Summer Scholars
Do I need a Passport?
If applying for a new passport, it will take 4-6 weeks to come in after finishing the application correctly, and we will need a copy of it by June 1. If you already have a passport, it must be valid through December 2020.
The best way to apply for a passport is to download the application form from travel.state.gov. You must create an appointment and submit your application in person at a local post office, county courthouse or some public libraries. There are required forms (ID, birth certificate, etc.) you must bring with you and a photo must be taken that meets their requirements, or it will be sent back for you to do again.
What are pre-travel requirements?
Students participating in Summer Scholars will have a required common reading assigned before the trip. Students will also be required to attend virtual meetings with ACU to onboard prior to travel.
How much luggage can I bring?
Luggage is ultimately dependant on the airline. We recommend a carry-on size suitcase that can be checked as well as a personal item.

Will students be accompanied at all times?
ACU faculty and staff will be with the Summer Scholars student group throughout the entire trip. We will travel as a group to each location and stay in the same hotels. Supervised free time will be allowed for shopping and exploring historical sites and museums.
