Admissions

As you prepare your application for the ACU Master of Arts in English program, you may have questions very similar to those of other applicants. Below are answers to a list of commonly asked questions.

We make rolling admission decisions year round, so there is no specific deadline. However, the earlier an application is submitted, the better — particularly for students wanting to apply for a Graduate Assistantship.

Yes, you can pay the $65 application fee within your application portal.

The minimum undergraduate GPA is a 3.0. Our GRE test score admission requirement is currently waived.

An appropriate length for the purpose statement is 1-2 pages, double spaced.

There is not an official minimum length for the writing sample; however, it should be more than a 3-4 page essay. Undergraduate writing samples are welcome.

At least 12 hours of upper-division English courses are required.

*If the student fails to meet all of the criteria described above, he/she can be admitted conditionally based on demonstrated academic potential and fit with the program.

Program

Students can apply for a fall (August) or spring (January) entry term.

Students complete the program in 2 years.

Students do not choose a specific track or specialization. We offer courses in literature, composition/rhetoric, and also options for creative writing.

Yes, upon approval of the Program Director.

Yes, students can enroll part time.

Yes, admitted students can apply for scholarship consideration.

Yes, we offer different levels of GAs, depending on the student’s progress in the program. GA positions offer opportunities to work in the Writing Center, to work as a Research Assistant, and also to teach freshman-level composition courses.

Many of our MA students start PhD programs immediately after completing the program. We offer a wide range of courses that allow our students the chance to explore various options for PhD specialties. Almost all of our students who pursue PhD programs do very well, and the majority of them receive some type of funding at those programs.
