iTunes Installation and Upgrade

In order to activate and sync your new iPhone or iPod Touch you will need to have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer. After setting iTunes up you might want to watch our tutorial on how to use iTunesU which is where some of your professors will post videos and podcasts.

Installing iTunes

To download the latest version of iTunes open your web browser and go to www.apple.com/iTunes/download and click on the “Download iTunes Free” button. (You can choose to receive newletters from Apple, but this is not required to download iTunes)

  • Mac - If you are using a Mac running OS X, you should already have iTunes installed. Please refer to the next section to ensure that you have updated to the latest version.
  • PC - On a Windows PC, you will want to save the file "iTunesSetup.exe" to your computer (most browsers will default to your desktop). You should then run "iTunesSetup.exe" and follow the on-screen instructions.

Updating iTunes

In order to properly activate your iPhone you will need to have the latest version of iTunes, since older versions will not work properly. You can update iTunes to the latest version by checking for updates in iTunes.

  • Mac - To check for iTunes updates on a Mac, go to "Menu" and select "Check for Updates."

  • PC - To check for updates in iTunes on a Windows PC, go to "Help," then select "Check for Updates" at the bottom of the menu.

Creating an Apple Account

You will need to have an Apple iTunes account to activate your iPhone and download music and apps from the iTunes Store.

To create an Apple Account, open iTunes and select "iTunes Store" on the right. From there, click on the "Sign In" button that appears in the upper right corner of the iTunes Store page. Once the sign-in prompt appears, select "Create New Account" and then just follow the on-screen instructions.
