Microsoft is preparing to release a free update for Windows XP that provides better protection against hackers, viruses, and worms. The best way to ensure you get Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) when it is released is by turning on Automatic Updates. You can use our step-by-step instructions to setup your Windows XP machine. Macintosh, Linux, and previous Windows OS users are not affected by the release of SP2.
Note: Students using Windows XP who have already downloaded SP2 or plan on updating via Windows Update need to check their pop-up blocking settings in order to be able to fully use Webmail. Click on the following link for instructions on how to disable the pop-up blocker for ACU sites:
Additional SP2 Changes - Firewall
SP2 also includes a new Firewall which is turned on by default. A firewall is a piece of software or hardware that creates a protective barrier between your computer and potentially harmful content on the Internet. It helps guard your computer against hackers and many computer viruses and worms.
The Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall can block useful tasks such as sharing files or printers through a network, transferring files in applications (for example, instant messaging), or hosting multiplayer games. If you have questions about using your applications with the Firewall enabled please call Team55 (325)674-5555 (Students) or the Helpdesk (325)738-4357 (Faculty/Staff).
Additional SP2 Changes - Security Center
Windows XP SP2 introduces a Security Center, which provides a single control point and an at-a-glance view of the status of Windows XP security. The Security Center can be easily accessed from the Control Panels. It also shows the status of Windows Update, your Firewall, and your Anti-virus application.
Note : If you do not have current anti-virus software running on your machine, Windows XP SP2 will continuously warn you of this vulnerability. ACU provides Sophos Anti-Virus to its Faculty/Staff and Students for both educational and home use. Click on the following link to find online instructions and downloads.
