Windows Updates for Employee Computers

Policy
As of October 1, 2003, computers within the ACU domain, owned by ACU faculty and staff, that run Windows Operating Systems, version 2000, XP, and newer, will receive automatic notification of operating system patches and security updates. Updates are available for installation with the first login. However, if they are not applied with the first login, the updates will install automatically with the second login.

Overview of Issue
Routine and regular operating system updates are vital to limiting exposure to network borne computer viruses, worms, and other random computer hacker attacks. Outdated operating systems preclude active protective action by Technology Support staff, heighten exposure to problems, and lengthen unnecessarily the time to solution for new computer related issues.

Change Control
Revisions to this policy must be reviewed and approved by the CIO Cabinet.
