Connected Faculty Interviews
In its first year of implementation, the focus of the ACU mobile learning initiative has been to encourage faculty experimentation. Faculty from across campus joined staff from the Adams Center for Teaching and Learning on pilots exploring mobile strategies to deepen learning in and out of the classroom. Pilot studies attempted to take existing technologies--like podcasting, clickers and blogging--and ask how mobility would change the way students or faculty used the tools. At the end of this first academic year, we wanted to share the following interviews that suggest promising applications and areas of future research. As with the iPhone itself, many of these experiments are simply a convergence of existing tools that leverage mobility to create new opportunities for teaching and learning. Clearly this is just the beginning.

Getting Connected with ACU Mobile
As ACU launched its mobile learning initiative in fall 2008, we wanted to lay the foundations with a true learning hub, bringing together tools already familiar to students and faculty with some new ideas about mobility. Our new portal, ACU Mobile, provides this essential foundation. In response to questions about how students and faculty were using these new web apps and interfaces, we developed the following podcast walkthroughs. Each podcast illustrates how existing systems were integrated in new ways to connect students with the people and resources that could make them successful.

Connected: The Movie
What might a university look like with a fully deployed program of converged devices like the iPhone? Connected is one possible vision. This fictional day-in-the-life account highlights some of the potential benefits in a higher education setting when every student, faculty, and staff member is "connected." Though the applications and functions portrayed in the film are purely speculative, they're based on needs and ideas uncovered by our research - and we've already been making strides to transform this vision of mobile learning into reality.
