Secure Practices
  1. Install Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware and keep it updated...Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware is only effective when it is regularly updated. <more>

  2. Don’t use ACU usernames and passwords for non-ACU accounts…It may be convenient to use one username & password for everything, but once it has been compromised, the university becomes vulnerable. <more>

  3. Lock or Log out your workstation when you leave the office…One of the easiest ways to bypass security measures is to have physical access to a computer that is logged into the network. <more>

  4. Don’t leave printouts with sensitive data unattended…With printers being placed in public areas, the need arises to ensure spying eyes don’t have full access to unattended printouts.  <more>

  5. Secure the office when you are away…If someone is willing to dumpster dive for information, we can infer that they are also more than eager to rifle through a desk or file cabinets. <more>

  6. Use secure web sites when transmitting sensitive data online…When you purchase items from the web, it is important to ensure that credit card information and banking account information is submitted through a secure (HTTPS) site. <more>

  7. Use a personal firewall…Installing a personal firewall adds yet another level of security to ensure the data integrity. <more>

  8. Keep the operating system patched… In 2004, Microsoft had 136 vulnerabilities identified in their suite of products.<more>

  9. Encrypt sensitive data…Using a method to lock sensitive data so others cannot open it, even if they retrieve or intercept the data deminishes the value of the data because it can not be accessed. <more>

  10. Don’t open email, click on links, open attachments...As a general rule of thumb, don’t open email unless you are expecting it, don’t click on links embedded in emails or sent via Instant Messaging services, & don’t open attachments unless you are 100% certain what it is, and you were expecting it. <more>
