Former New Mexico prep standout joins Wildcats

ABILENE -- ACU head tennis coach Hutton Jones announced Monday that he has added trnasfer Sara Baker to the women's tennis roster for the 2005-06 season.

Baker transfers to ACU from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, N.M., where she played in 2003-04 as a freshman.  She sat out the 2004-05 season and will have three years of eligibility remaining at ACU.

As a freshman at New Mexico State, Baker saw action at the Nos. 5 and 6 singles spots,going 5-9 in dual matches.  She compiled an overall record of 12-10.  Baker was 2-0 in doubles play with Sandra Mayr as her partner going 1-0 in the No. 3 doubles spot in dual matches, and 1-0 overall.

Baker was a standout prep player at Hobbs High School, helping her team to a combined 129-6 record over five years.  She began playing on the varsity in the eigthh grade and was the Lady Eagles' No. 1 player all five years.  During her five seasons at Hobbs HS, Baker was 163-6 in singles play, including a 68-0 record in her last two seasons.

She was a five-time team captain and five-time district singles champion, as well as a five-time all-state selection.  She was the state singles champion as a junior and senior (2002 and 2003), and she led her team to three state titles (1999-2001) and a pair of runner-up finishes (2002-03).
