ABILENE -- With their first goal out of the way, the ACU Wildcats can now turn their attention to finishing their regular season on a positive note and getting ready to go after their next goal: a Lone Star Conference championship.
ACU completed the first of its season goals Tuesday with a 3-0 win over Angelo State that clinched the Wildcats' first LSC South Division championship. The Wildcats (24-7 overall and 9-1 in the LSC South Division) will be the No. 1 seed from the LSC South in next weekend's LSC Post-Season Tournament, which will get started Nov. 11 in Lawton, Okla., the site of LSC North Division winner Cameron.
The Wildcats and Lady Aggies will each receive a first-round bye into Friday's semifinals. ACU will play the winner of the Eastern New Mexico-Central Oklahoma match, while Cameron will await thewinner of the Angelo State-Texas Woman's match.
The conference tournament championship match is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at Aggie Gym.
The Wildcats are still ranked in the top five in the NCAA Division II Southwest Region poll, meaning they are likely to earn a spot in the regional tournament for the first time in school history. That tournament will be played Nov. 18-20, and is likely to be played in Kearney, Neb., the home of the top-ranked team in both the region and the nation in Nebraska-Kearney. The LSC has three teams -- ACU, Eastern New Mexico and Angelo State -- ranked in the top eight of the latest regional poll. The top eight teams in the final regional poll of the season will be invited to the regional tournament.
ACU will close out the regular season this weekend with a pair of matches at Moody Coliseum. The Wildcats will take on Incarnate Word at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by a noon match Saturday against St. Mary's.
The Wildcats dropped a 3-0 decision to St. Mary's in San Antonio on Sept. 10, and beat Incarnate Word, 3-1, in San Antonio on Sept. 11.
