Wildcats dominate all-LSC squad

ACU places 26 athletes on all-conference team

RICHARDSON -- Perennial track power Abilene Christian led the way with 26 of the 47 student-athletes named to the all-Lone Star Conference performers list for their efforts at the 2006 LSC Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Championships.

ACU’s men and women swept the team championships at the 2006 LSC meet, which wrapped up April 22 in Stephenville. The Wildcat men had 12 all-conference performers while the women added 14.

The list of all-conference performers includes the winner of each event at the conference meet, including all members of the winning relay teams, plus any athlete who scores at least 14 points at the meet. In all, 25 men and 22 women were recognized by the all-conference program, including at least one from each of the six member institutions that sponsor track and field teams. The list was comprised of student-athletes from seven different states and four foreign countries.

In addition to the announcement of All-LSC performers, the league recognized six student-athletes and two coaches with special honors.

On the men’s side, Marvin Bien-Aime of ACU and Shaunte Lovings from Tarleton State shared the Cap Shelton Award as Outstanding Male Track Athletes, while Angelo State’s Spencer Tyler picked up the Oscar Stahan Award as Outstanding Male Field Athlete. Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Brent Ericksen and ACU’s Don Hood shared the honor of Men’s Track Coach of the Year.

For the women, ACU’s Trina Cox won the Wes Kittley Award for a second straight year as Outstanding Female Track Athlete, while Angelo State’s Adree Lakey and ACU’s Jessica Withrow shared the David Noble Award as Outstanding Female Field Athletes. ACU’s Hood earned Women’s Track Coach of the Year accolades.

The special awards were voted upon by the league coaches.

Bien-Aime had conference championship efforts in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 400-meter relay for a second consecutive season, while Lovings set a meet record by winning the 110-meter hurdles in a blazing 13.77 seconds. Tyler was first in the discus while finishing second in the shot put and sixth in the hammer.

Cox won the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs, while Withrow scored a meet-high 38 points after winning the heptathlon and high jump in addition to finishing second in the long jump, third in the 100-meter hurdles and fourth in the 400-meter hurdles.
