STEPHENVILLE -- ACU freshman Jessica Withrow is in first place after Monday's first day of the Lone Star Conference heptathlon championships at Memorial Stadium on the Tarleton State University campus.
Withrow has a commanding lead of 327 points over Kyndel Howell of Angelo State going into Tuesday's final three events. Withrow won three of Monday's four events to rack up 3,111 points to 2,784 points for Howell. ACU junior Jessica Blair is in third place in the standings with 2,596 points.
The Wildcats are hoping to reclaim the LSC women's team championship after Angelo State won the title in each of the last two years. A win by Withrow and a top-three finish by Blair would give the Wildcats 16 points in the heptathlon, and a big push toward winning the conference championship this weekend in Stephenville.
Withrow won three events on Monday, capturing the 100-meter hurdles (15.10 seconds), high jump (5 feet, 8.75 inches) and 200 meters (25.79). She was second in the other event, posting a mark of 33-10.75 in the shot put.
On the men's side, Jon-Daniel Todd is in fifth place in the decathlon event with 3,292 points. Ryan McWilliams of Angelo State is in first place after Monday's first day with 3,640 points. Jason Simmons of Angelo State is in second with 3,565 points, followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville's Isaac Saldivar (3,400 points) and Tarleton State's Chase Moore (3,396 points).
Todd was fourth in the 100 meters (11.63), second in the long jump (21-9.50), third in the high jump (6-0.50), and sixth in the 400 meters (53.07).
Both the heptathlon and decathlon competitions will conclude Tuesday with the points carrying over to the weekend's running and field events at the LSC championship meet. Friday's schedule includes some field events, as well as running event preliminaries. Saturday's schedule includes more field events and running event finals.
