Murray adds West Texas sprinter

Irion County standout inks with Wildcats

ABILENE -- ACU head track and field coach Jon Murray announced Thursday that Irion County standout Josh Jones has signed a binding national letter-of-intent to run track for the Wildcats in 2004-05.

Jones has been one of the top small-school athletes in West Texas for the last three years.  A three-sport standout in football, basketball and track and field, Jones led Irion County to three straight Class A team titles in track and field (2002-04), and he has been honored by several outlets for his performance on the football field and on the basketball court.

In track and field, Jones won four state individual championships, one relay championship and earned one individual runner-up finish in the last three years.  As a junior in 2003 he won individual state titles in the 400 meters, long jump and triple jump.

As a sophomore in 2002 he was part of the winning 4x100 relay team, and he also finished second in the 400 meters, third in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump.  As a senior in 2004 he won the 400 meters, was fourth in the long jump and was part of the runner-up team in the 4x200 relay.

He has personal bests of 22 feet, 9.0 inches in the long jump, 46 feet, 3.0 inches in the triple jump, 48.0 in the 400 meters and 21.75 in the 200 meters.

As a sophomore on the football field, Jones was named to the San Angelo Standard-Times all-West Texas Team.  As a junior he was all-district, honorable mention all-state at defensive back, and was named to the Standard-Times Super Team.  Also as a junior he was all-district, all-region and all-state as a basketball player.

As a senior he was the district all-Purpose MVP, a member of the Standard-Times' Super Team, all-state at linebacker and honorable mention all-state at quarterback.
