ACU signs Waco distance runner

Midway High School standout inks with Wildcats

ABILENE -- Abilene Christian University track and field coach Jon Murray announced Thursday that he has signed Waco Midway cross country standout Andrew Rogers to a national letter-of-intent.

Rogers, the 2004 Region II-4A cross country champion, will join the Wildcats this summer and run on the 2005 cross country and 2006 track and field teams.

Last fall as a senior at Midway, Rogers led his team to both the District 16-4A and Region II-4A team championships by winning the individual title at both meets.  At the district meet, Rogers covered the 5,000-meter course in 17:06 to win the individual race, and then covered the 3-mile regional course in 16:04.03 to win the individual title.  He went on to finish 26th at the Class 4A state cross country meet.

Earlier this month at the District 16-4A track and field championships, Rogers won the 1600 meters (4:35.59) and was third in the 800 meters (2:01.99).  He will compete in the 1600 meters at the Region II-4A meet this weekend.

He has personal bests of 4:22 in the 1600 meters, 1:59 in the 800 meters, 10:11.0 in the 3200 meters and 24.6 in the 200 meters.
