Wildcats play well at Aggie Invitational

Ray, Steenkamp reach doubles semifinals before rains hit

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- The ACU men's tennis team fared well over the weekend at the New Mexico State Aggie Invitational, but rain on Sunday cancelled all the finals, keeping the Wildcats from winning any titles.

The doubles team of Jason Ray and Casper Steenkamp reached the semifinals, and their quarterfinal win came in an 8-4 decision over teammates Artin Tafazoli and Kevin Beedy.  Ray and Steenkamp opened the doubles competition with an 8-4 win over Eric Conklin and Derek Lynch of New Mexico.  Beedy and Tafazoli reached the quarterfinals with a first-round 8-3 win over Ben Archer-Clowes and Danilo Zivanovic of New Mexico State.

In singles play, Tafazoli reached the quarterfinals with a first-round bye and a second-round 6-2, 6-2 win over Kamil Pajkowski of New Mexico.

Selected Wildcats will be back in action this weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region championships in Springfield, Mo.  Steenkamp won last year's regional singles title to advance to the national tournament.
