Wildcats dominate Wal-Mart Open

ACU wins men's, women's singles championships

ABILENE -- ACU dominated the season-opening Wal-Mart Open over the weekend, capturing individual titles at both men's and women's Flight 1 singles.

Artin Tafazoli, a senior transfer from UNLV, defeated Wildcat teammate Casper Steenkamp in the men's singles final in the first flight.  Tafazoli did not lose a single set in his first tournament as a Wildcat.

ACU's Summer Beesley won on the women's Flight 1 singles title, beating Hardin-Simmons University's Rebecca Watkins. Watkins won the first set 6-4, but Beesley came back to win the next two.

In doubles competition Tafazoli had even more success, teaming with Kevin Beedy to defeat HSU's Roy Lehman and Wade Morgan 8-2 in the second flight. The Cowboys' top doubles team of Brad Grace and David Wu knocked off ACU's top team of Jason Ray and Steenkamp.

ACU also won the title in women's Flight 1 doubles with Colleen Reynolds and Rachel Taylor winning. The HSU women captured both the second and third flights of the women's doubles matches.
