Wildcat season comes to end

Muleriders move on; Wildcats eliminated

ABILENE, Texas -- Southern Arkansas third baseman Lance Colvin's RBI triple in the eighth inning Saturday inning led the Muleriders to a 5-4 win over Abilene Christian in an elimination game at the NCAA Division II South Central Region tournament at Crutcher Scott Field.

The Wildcats see their season end at 44-18, while Southern Arkansas moves on to face Montevallo at 8 p.m. Saturday night.

ACU led 2-0 before the Muleriders rallied to tie the score and then take the lead at 3-2.  After ACU tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Danny Williams.  But the Muleriders got the lead back in the top of the sixth when Lance Colvin's RBI double down the right field line drove in Tyler Murray.

The Wildcats managed to get the game tied in the bottom of the seventh when Johnny Zepeda on a ground ball by Ruben Rivera that was booted by SAU shortstop Derek Weldon.  Rivera -- who came in to pitch in the sixth inning in place of starter Chris Wiman -- gave up a run in the top of the eighth when Colvin dropped a two-out triple just inches fair down the left field line, driving in Kolby Tucker with the eventual game-winning run.

ACU got a runner to second in the bottom of the ninth, but Rivera grounded out to end the game.  The inability to get a runner in from scoring position was a theme for the Wildcats on the weekend as they had 33 hits in the tournaments, but all of them were singles.  ACU left 12 runners on base Saturday, five of them on second base.

The Wildcats are now 3-8 all-time in regionals hosted in Abilene, having gone 1-2 in 1996, 2000 and 2006 and 0-2 in 2001.
