ABILENE, Texas -- Montevallo scored nine runs in the third inning Friday night on its way to a 22-2 rout of Southern Arkansas in the winner's bracket game of the NCAA Division II South Central Region tournament at Crutcher Scott Field on the campus of Abilene Christian University.
The Falcons (39-16) will play Saturday at 8 p.m. against the winner of Saturday morning's elimination game between the tournament's top two seeds in No. 1 Abilene Christian and No. 2 Southern Arkansas.
Friday night's game was never in doubt as the Falcons scored three runs in the first, one in the second and nine in the third to take a commanding 13-0 lead. The lead was 22-0 before the Muleriders (39-17) finally got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Every players that made a plate appearance for the Falcons either scored, got a hit or drove in a run as they pounded out 23 hits and took advantage of eight Mulerider errors in the win. Daniel Furuto was 2 for 5 with four RBI, while Dave Nanney was 4 for 5 with two RBI. Travis Fultz drove in three runs, while J.D. Pruitt, Brantly Clay, Daniel Tankersly and Jared Myrick each had two RBI in the game.
Josh Davis went the distance on the mound for Montevallo, scattering 10 hits and walking just one batter while striking out four in improving to 8-3 on the season.
