ACU Hall of Famer dies

Former footballstandout, 'Red' Stromquist, dead at age 82

BRADY -- Former ACU football letterman and Sports Hall of Fame member Helmuth E. "Red" Stromquist, died Wednesday.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in Sunset Ridge Church of Christ in Brady with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Stromquist was a four-year letterman in football for the Wildcats before his graduation from Abilene Christian in 1941 with a B.S. degree in physical eduation.

He was twice named all-Texas Conference at end, and he earned honorable mention all-America honors in 1938 and third team all-America honors in 1939 from the Associated Press. He helped the Wildcats win Texas Conference championships in 1939 (6-2-1) and 1940 (7-2) under coach A.B. Morris. Stromquist was also named to the ACU all-decade football team for the 1930s.

He was a 1937 graduate of Melvin High School. Stromquist served in the United States Air Force, retiring with the rank of colonel.
