DALLAS -- Allen Wilson, who has coached two teams to state championships, will be the next head football coach and athletic director at Carter, the Dallas ISD announced Thursday.

Wilson was a defensive back on Abilene Christian's 1973 football team which won the NAIA Division I national championship and Lone Star Conference title. Wilson competed in football, track and field, and basketball for Midland Lee before graduating in 1970.

At ACU, he earned three varsity letters in football, intercepted five passes in his career and led the Wildcats in punt returns. He was captain of the 1973 team as a senior and served as graduate assistant coach in 1974 before his graduation in 1975.

Wilson, 50, leaves Tyler John Tyler after 11 seasons, including an undefeated Class 5A state championship run in 1994. Wilson also led Paris to a 4A title in 1988.

"As an outsider looking at Carter for the many years I've been coaching, I always admired the type of players they put on the field," Wilson said. "I knew I'd like to coach there one day, and the opportunity presented itself."

Wilson replaces Marvin Sedberry, who led Carter for one season before returning to Greenville, where he coached the previous nine years.

Carter lost a well-respected coach in Sedberry but gains another one in Wilson, who is 162-64-4 in 19 seasons as a head coach. He led John Tyler to a state runner-up finish in 2000.

"You can talk about it, but if you've never been [a state champion], it's still just a dream," Wilson said. "When you've won two, you know the road map. And I think the kids are a little more willing to jump on board and follow the lead."

Carter went 8-3 last season, losing, 35-16, to eventual state champion Lufkin in the first round of the playoffs. Carter has not won a playoff game since 1995.

Wilson will be Carter's fourth coach in four years and the fifth since Freddie James retired after the 1995 season.

Bruce Chambers left for an assistant coaching job at Texas after two seasons. Linus Walton coached two seasons before being removed after he was convicted of stealing money from the school. Carter had an interim coach in 2000.
