Stephen Moore named to U.S. national track and field team

PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain -- Stephen Moore of Abilene Christian University has been named to the U.S. national track and field team for the World University Games here July 3-13.

Moore, senior on the Wildcat men's track and field team, will leave Abilene this weekend for this Mediterranean island to compete in the decathlon July 11-12. He is the sixth student-athlete from ACU men's team to compete for the U.S. in the World University Games.

Two other Wildcats, distance runners Gilbert Tuhabonye and Alfred Rugema, will compete for Burundi at the 20th World University Games here.

Moore was 1996 NCAA Division II national champion in the decathlon as a sophomore. This season he was Lone Star Conference and NCAA Division II champion in the long jump and runner-up in the decathlon at the NCAA Division II national meet. Last week he placed fifth in the decathlon at the U.S. national championships in Eugene, Ore., with a personal best of 7,864.

Moore, 1994 graduate of Borger High School, is married to the former Tiffany Wadley of Abilene. The couple has a daughter, McKenzie, 1.

Other ACU student-athletes who competed for the U.S. at the World University Games were Roger Colglazier in Rome, Italy, in 1970, Billy Olson in Mexico City in 1979, Brad Pursley in Bucharest, Romania, in 1981, Brian Amos in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1995 and Kevin Dilworth in Catania, Sicily, in 1997. Colglazier (gold) and Amos (silver) were medal winners.
