Cadienhead wins high jump at Texas Relays Men's team qualifies two for Saturday finals; Shalev fifth in shot put For immediate release 05 April 2002 AUSTIN -- ACU senior Maresa Cadienhead added her name to an impressive list Friday at the 75th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. Cadienhead won the high jump over a field of NCAA Division I athletes at Mike A. Myers Stadium, becoming only the fifth female Wildcat athlete to ever win a field-event championship at the Texas Relays, one of the nation's most prestigious track and field events. Cadienhead, a three-time NCAA Division II national champion in the event and the defending outdoor champion, jumped 6-0.00 to win the event over Whitney Evans of Washington State, who jumped 5-11.25. Cadienhead had hoped to jump against former University of Texas all-America and Olympic high jumper, Erin Aldrich, but she was a late scratch before the event started. "I was looking forward to competing today because I thought I was going to compete against Erin Aldrich, but obviously she wasn't here," Cadienhead said. "And the fact that the crowd wasn't as energetic as it has been (at past Texas Relays) in the past had a negative impact on my performance. I prepared like I normally prepare; I jumped as good as I could jump today, and I wouldn't change a thing." Cadienhead did not enter the competition until the bar was at 1.74 meters (5 feet, 8.50 inches), and she needed only three jumps to win the competition one at 1.74 meters, one at 1.79 meters (5-10.50) and one at 1.83 meters (6-0.00). Morgan High of Kansas State missed all three of her attempts at 6-0.00 and finished fourth. "Maresa was her usual consistent self, despite the competition," ACU head coach Jon Murray said. "I don't think any of us expected anything less from her." Cadienhead joined Sonya Smith (javelin in 1984 and 1985), Yolanda Henry (high jump in 1986 and in 1992 as a member of the Mazda Track Club), Monique Kuenen (discus in 1997) and Geraldine George (javelin in 2000) as the only ACU women to ever win a field-event title at the Texas Relays. On the men's side, sophomore Christie VanWyk and freshman Richard Phillips advanced to Saturday finals in their respective events. VanWyk ran an easy 10.70 to win his heat of the 100 meters and advance to Saturday's final, while Phillips ran a 14.73 to finish second in his heat of the 110-meter hurdles and advance to Saturday's final. Phillips will also be running in Saturday's 400-meter hurdle final after qualifying Thursday night with a time of 53.05 seconds. Freshman shot-putter Shai Shalev finished fifth in the Section B shot put with a mark of 55 feet, 10.25 inches. ACU sprinters Rodney Pitts (10.90) and Dree Ryan (10.99) failed to qualify
for Saturday's 100-meter final, and the Sprint Medley relay team was disqualified
after a bad exchange between VanWyk and Phillips. MEN'S: Baseball | Basketball
