Cadienhead sets new school indoor mark in high jump

Senior tops six-foot barrier to break Yolanda Henry's record

FAYETTVILLE, Ark. -- ACU senior Maresa Cadienhead jumped 6 feet, 1.50 inches Saturday to win the high jump at the Tyson Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Center, and in the process she broke the ACU indoor record in the event, besting Yolanda Henry's mark by more than one inch.

Cadienhead's effort -- a personal-best in the high jump for the two-time national champion -- beat Henry's old mark of 6-0.25, which she set in Oklahoma City on Feb. 7, 1986.

Cadienhead was already an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division II indoor national championship meet next month in Boston, but her effort Saturday solidified her hold on the No. 1 spot in the country.

Freshman pole vaulter Katie Eckley of California also had a personal-best in her event Saturday, vaulting 12 feet, 7.50 inches to take third. Eckley has the top Division II pole vault mark in the country, and is one of three ACU vaulters -- past national champions Jane McNeill and Meredith Garner are the other two -- who have solid provisional qualifying marks for the indoor meet.

Garner, the 2000 outdoor national champion and Division II record-holder in the pole vault, competed for the first time this season Saturday and vaulted 10-11.75 to provisionally qualify.

On the men's side, sprinter Nic Alexander automatically qualified for the 55-meter dash by finishing third in the 60 meters at 6.73. Also automatically qualifying for the men Saturday was middle-distance standout John Kemboi, who ran a 4:02.50 to qualify in the mile.

The four-time national champion will try to qualify in the 800 meters next weekend when he runs against some of the best competition in the nation at the 2nd Annual Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York City.
