Honors keep coming for Raphelt

ACU senior punter named first team 'Little all-America'

Abilene Christian senior punter Brad Raphelt on Wednesday was named first team Little all-America by the Associated Press.

The honor is just the latest in an off-season full of them for Raphelt, who has already been named first team all-Lone Star Conference South Division, first team all-West region, first team all-America by the American Football Coaches' Association and second team all-America by d2football.com. The Daktronics/CoSIDA all-America team -- voted on by Division II College Sports Information Directors -- will be announced Dec. 20.

Raphelt was an effective weapon for the Wildcats during the 2001 season, averaging 44.1 yards per punt, which shattered the previous season record of 41.1 yards per punt by Leondus Fry in 1956. For his career, Raphelt averaged 40.0 yards per punt on 171 attempts.

He had a long punt of 74 yards and dropped 14 of his 56 punts (25 percent) inside the opposition 20-yard line. He also picked up bad snaps and ran three times on the season for
43 yards. Two of his three scampers resulted in first downs for the Wildcats. He was actually the Wildcats' fifth-leading rusher on the season with those 43 yards.

Raphelt has already been added to the West roster for the Whataburger Cactus Bowl, a Division II all-star game that will be played Jan. 11, 2002, in Kingsville.

Record-setting quarterback Curt Anes, who passed for 3,086 yards and 48 touchdowns, was among a trio of players from national runner-up Grand Valley State (Mich.) selected to the team.

Wide receiver David Kircus and offensive tackle Dale Westrick were the other
Lakers chosen for the 26-player team. Anes, a junior from Kentwood, Mich., set a Division II record with a 221.6 pass efficiency rating, and led the nation in total offense at 362.1 yards
per game. He hit 189 of 271 passes, and threw just three interceptions in 10 games.

Grand Valley State finished 13-1, losing to North Dakota 17-14 in the national title game. Anes missed the last three games after he injured his knee in the Lakers' first playoff game.

Dusty Bonner of Valdosta State, the two-time Harlon Hill winner as D-II's top player, was the second-team quarterback. Bonner made the first team in 2000.

Kircus caught 62 passes for 1,301 yards and 28 TDs to finish as D-II's leading scorer. The other receivers are D.J. Humphries of Presbyterian (S.C.) and Nate Jackson of Menlo.
Humphries caught 95 passes for 1,340 yards and 14 TDs, and Jackson had 105 grabs -- the most in D-III -- for 1,520 yards and 17 TDs.

Chuck Moore of Division III national champion Mount Union and Josh Ranek of South Dakota State are the running backs. Moore, the Gagliardi Trophy winner as his division's top player, ran for 1,351 yards and topped D-III with 24 touchdowns. Ranek had 1,804 yards and
18 TDs.

In addition to Westrick, the offensive line features Chris Booker of Delta State, Jeremy Eardley of Chadron State, J.D. Sheldon of Augustana (Ill.) and Seth Wand of Northwest Missouri State. The all-purpose player is wide receiver Clarence Coleman of Ferris State. Coleman caught 94 passes for 1,346 yards and 12 TDs, and led D-II in all-purpose yards at 238 per game. He also returned kicks and punts, two for TDs.

Cameron Peterka of national champion North Dakota is the kicker for the second year in a row. Peterka hit 20 of 29 field goal attempts in the regular season. Coleman and Peterka are the lone repeaters from last year's squad.

The defense is led by lineman Steve Wilson of King's (Pa.), linebacker Jeremiah Janssen of St. Norbert (Wis.) and defensive backs Gregg Albano of Bentley (Mass.) and Jason Patterson of Central Washington.

Wilson had 19.5 sacks; Janssen had 88 tackles with eight sacks and five forced fumbles; Albano led the nation with 12 interceptions; and Patterson had 11 picks.

Joining Wilson on the line are Aaron McConnell of Pittsburg State, Leif Murphy of North Dakota State and Chad Oberholzer of Shippensburg (Pa.).

The other linebackers are Eddie Key of Southern Arkansas, Josh Hotchkiss of Western State (Colo.) and Kiah Johnson of Texas A&M-Kingsville. The secondary also includes Nate Coggins of West Georgia and Joey Flora of Indiana (Pa.).

The team, chosen from players in Divisions II and III and the NAIA, features 18 seniors, six juniors and two sophomores, McConnell and Wilson.
