Wayne WaltonWayne Walton was the highest professional draft choice in the history of ACU Wildcat football. He was selected in the second round by New York in 1971 after Giants' scouts rated him the top collegiate offensive lineman in the nation. He was the 39th player selected in the draft (before any player from the Southwest Conference). He was a four-year letterman in both football and track and field at Abilene Christian. He was first team all-Southland Conference and honorable mention all-America as a senior in 1970, and he was second team all-decade in the SLC for the 1960s. The 6-5, 275-pound offensive tackle played for the Giants in 1971-72 and Kansas City Chiefs in 1973-74. Walton was also a two-time Southland Conference champion in the discus throw for the Wildcats and previously held the school record with a throw of 180-10. He graduated from Azle High School in 1967 after earning all-state in football and all-district in basketball and finishing second at the state track meet in the discus. Now a businessman in Fort Worth, he received a B.S. degree in business from ACU in 1971. His son, Andy, is currently a freshman on the ACU varsity basketball team for 1993-94. |
