Willard TateWillard Tate coached the winningest team in the history of men's basketball at Abilene Christian University. He led the 1979-80 team to a 27-5 record and a bid to the NAIA national tournament in Kansas City, Mo. He is now associate professor of communication at Abilene Christian, minister for Hamby Church of Christ and a popular speaker at seminars, workshops and churches across the nation. Tate coached the Wildcats for seven seasons in 1973-80. His teams won two Lone Star Conference titles, and he had a combined record of 119-79. He coached three all-America players and the university's former career scoring leader. His winning percentage of .601 is better than any other coach of at least two seasons in the history of ACU men's basketball. A graduate of Alabama Christian College and Auburn University, Tate received a master's degree from Troy State University. He was director of athletics and men's basketball coach at Alabama Christian before joining the ACU staff in 1973. A 1954 graduate of Corner, Ala., High School, he is the author of several books and teaches Life Learning Skills, one of the most popular courses on the ACU campus. |
