Don SmithDon Smith, a 1953 graduate of Abilene Christian, is a retired coach and businessman in Abilene. He coached Abilene's Cooper High School to the Texas high school state championship in track and field in 1964, before coaching football and track at ACU in 1968-81. He was an assistant coach on the Wildcats' 1973 and 1977 football teams, which won NAIA Division I national championships, and served as head track coach at ACU in 1974-77. While competing at ACU, he was captain and all-conference at defensive back in football, and he ran on winning relay teams at the Texas, Kansas and Drake Relays. He helped the Wildcats claim the NAIA track title in 1952, and he played on ACU's only undefeated, untied football team (11-0 in 1950). He was named outstanding athlete at ACU for the 1952-53 school year. ACU won three conference titles in football and four in track and field while Smith was a student-athlete. Smith was named Texas High School Coach of the Year in track and field in 1964, after taking Cooper to the state title with only five athletes. He was a high school sports star in Riverside, Calif., before coming to Abilene Christian. |
