Leon Reese

Leon Reese was an all-Texas Conference basketball player at ACU in 1940-41 and a pioneer of the one-handed jump shot in collegiate basketball in the southwestern United States during the 1939-40 season.

A 1937 graduate of Abilene High School, Reese was also a three-year tennis letterman at ACU. He received a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1941 and served as president of A Club, Alpha Chi and Business Administration Club, and vice president of the Students' Association.

"There isn't much an opponent can do in the way of defense when Reese is hot with his jumping push shot," an Abilene sportswriter said of the Wildcat forward, who finished runner-up in the conference scoring race as a senior.

Now with Abilene's Chevron distributor, Gerlach Oil Company, he has worked in the oil industry in Abilene for more than 40 years, including service with Exxon, Phillips 66 and Fina. Reese also served in the U.S. Air Force.

His father, James C. Reese, was vice president of the university's Board of Trustees.
