John Lawler

John Lawler, highly-successful businessman in the mining industry in Australia, was NCAA Division I champion in the steeplechase in 1961 and one of the top middle distance runners in the history of ACU track and field.

As a sophomore at the NCAA meet June 17, 1961, at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, he defeated runners from Villanova, Michigan and Penn State to win the steeplechase in the meet record time of 9:01.1.

He also set the U.S. freshman record for the steeplechase and the Texas collegiate record for the mile and won the 1962 Penn Relays steeplechase during his career at ACU. Lawler was team captain and a member of the dean's honor roll at ACU. After his graduation in 1963, he received a fellowship for graduate study at Yale University.

Lawler is currently the longest-serving CEO in the mineral and mining industry in the world. He was appointed chief executive officer of a group of mining companies in 1976, and in 1980 he was responsible for the development and operation of the richest uranium mine in the world. He was an economist for Mobil Oil in New York after college before his return to his native Australia.
