Alton Green

Alton Green was one of the top runningbacks in college football in Texas during his four-year career with the Wildcats at Abilene Christian.

A line-smashing fullback, he was captain of the university's only undefeated, untied team as a senior in 1950 (11-0) and led Abilene Christian to two Texas Conference championships in 1948 and 1950. He was an all-conference selection and led the Wildcats in rushing in 1949 with 833 yards (4.9 yards per carry) and again in 1950 with 949 yards (4.9 yards per carry).

He ranked among the national rushing leaders in the NCAA and earned second team all-America. Green was a 1947 graduate of Roscoe High School before enrolling at Abilene Christian. During his playing days at ACU, the Wildcats registered victories over Arizona State, Southwest Texas State, Tampa and Tennessee-Chattanooga along with their famous win over Gustavus Adolphus in the Refrigerator Bowl in 1950 in Evansville, Ind.

Green was a successful high school football and basketball coach in Texas before beginning his business career. He is now a retired businessman in San Angelo.
