Dr. Orval FilbeckDr. Orval Filbeck is the eighth person to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the ACU Sports Hall of Fame. He retired as a professor in the university's Department of Education in 1982 after 37 years of teaching at ACU. He served as chairman of the department, director of student teacher certification and director of summer session for the university. After retirement, he helped establish the Abilene Clean and Proud program for the City of Abilene. After graduating from high school in Springfield, Mo., Filbeck earned bachelor's and master's degrees from East Texas State and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas in Austin. He is a former member of Outstanding Educators of America. Filbeck served on committees for the Texas Education Agency and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, and he is a past president of the Taylor County chapter of the Texas State Teachers Association, Abilene Mental Health Association and Abilene Boys Ranch. His grandson, Corey Stone, is the career scoring leader in ACU men's basketball. |
