Larry Cox

Larry Cox was one of the best linemen in the history of football at Abilene Christian. He earned first team all-America from the Associated Press as a senior in 1965 and earned a starting position as a 6-3, 254-pound defensive tackle with the Denver Broncos in the NFL as a rookie in 1966.

Now a school principal in LaPorte, Cox graduated from Anson High School in 1962 after earning all-state honors for the Tigers. He was one of only four freshmen to earn a varsity letter at ACU in 1962, and he later was a three-time all-Texas college selection by the Dallas Morning News and Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Cox was also unanimous all-Southland Conference and Lineman of the Year on the all-Texas college team for 1965.

Cox was drafted in the 10th round by the Broncos in 1966, and after playing four seasons in Denver for coach Lou Saban, he competed for the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers in 1970 and San Diego Chargers in 1971 before retiring from the NFL.

One of his ACU coaches, James Lyda, said, "Larry Cox plays football like it's supposed to be played."
