Robert L. (Squib) Carruthers

Robert L. (Squib) Carruthers was captain and all-conference center for the Wildcats and successful high school football coach before beginning his business career. Carruthers received a B.S. degree in education and history from Abilene Christian in 1937. He died July 18, 1993, at the age of 78, and his wife Eloise is a resident of Abilene.

Carruthers was the university's nominee for the Sports Illustrated silver anniversary all-America team in 1961. He coached at Roscoe, Dalhart, Eldorado and McCamey. During a six-year period from 1937 to 1942, his high school teams had a record of 46-18-5. A 1933 graduate of San Angelo Central High School, he later was named to the San Angelo Central High School all-time team.

He developed pioneer oil industry safety programs for Shell Oil Company and served as president of the Gulf Coast Council of Safety Engineers and committee chairman for American Petroleum Institute. He later was a branch manager for American Founders Life Insurance Company. Carruthers also served as an elder for congregations of the Church of Christ in Houston, San Angelo and Austin.
