Chip BennettChip Bennett was Player of the Year for college division football for the 1969 season after the hard-hitting 6-3, 230-pound senior linebacker averaged 12 tackles a game, earned first team all-America and led the Wildcats to a record of 8-2. He was named to the Kodak all-America team by the American Football Coaches Association and to the Associated Press all-America team. Bennett was drafted in the third round by Cincinnati and played for the Bengals in the NFL in 1970 and 1971 before knee injuries ended his career. At ACU, he was team captain, first team all-Southland Conference as a junior in 1968 and senior in 1969, all-Texas college in 1968, and second team on the SLC all-decade team for the 1960s. He had a perfect 4.0 grade average during his senior season, and the two-year letterman received the university's annual Trustees Student Award. He came to ACU as a tryout in football without a scholarship and later received a B.S. degree in business in 1970. A 1965 graduate of Denver City High School, he competed in football, basketball and track and field. Bennett is now a farmer and rancher in Plains, Texas. His father, Gene H. Bennett, Sr., also played football and basketball at Abilene Christian. |
