ACU Sports Hall of Fame

BIll Gilbreth

Bill Gilbreth

Bill Gilbreth, now in private business in Abilene, graduated from ACU in 1969 after one of the most remarkable athletic careers in school history.

The first baseball player to be enshrined in the ACU Sports Hall of Fame, Gilbreth still holds the school record for all-time strikeouts with an almost-unbreakable 445 during his four-year career. He compiled 25 victories, two no-hitters and a staggering 2.01 earned run average in his career. He led the nation in strikeouts in both his sophomore and junior seasons with 134 strikeouts in each season, and he struck out 18 batters in a game four times in his career.

Gilbreth was a third-round pick of the Detroit Tigers in June 1969, and he pitched in his first major league game on June 25, 1971, a complete-game victory against Cleveland. He was later traded to California and played for the Angels until retiring in 1975.

He was the first head baseball coach hired after ACU brought the program back in 1991 after a 12-year absence. He coached the Wildcats through the 1995 season, racking up a school-record 108 wins and winning the Lone Star Conference championship in 1993.
