He was 12th in the decathlon at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, seventh in the decathlon in Seoul, South Korea, in 1988, and 12th in the pole vault in Barcelona, Spain, in 1992.

He was listed among the top 10 in world and U.S. ranks in Track and Field News virtually every year since beginning club competition in 1984 until his retirement from competition in 1997. He was a USA/Mobil national champion in the decathlon in 1987 and the pole vault in 1991 and 1992.
