ACU capitalized on its opportunity to host the NCAA Division II South Central Region meet Saturday with the women taking second and the men winning their sixth straight regional title with a win at Sherrod Residential Park.
Both teams had the top three individual finishers with Nicodemus Naimadu repeating as the regional champ with a time of 31:13.90 followed by teammates Phillip Birgen and Serge Gasore who finished second and third respectively. Trina Cox placed first after finishing third in last year's regional, winning with a time of 21:49.10. Olha Kryv'Yak finished seond and last year's regional title holder Adeh Mwamba finished third.
The ACU women's second place finish gives them their first appearence at the national meet since 1995. Central Missouri State edged the Wildcats with 73 place points where ACU finished with 75. Central Missouri's top five runners finished no worse than 22nd place with its top runner - Danielle Moulnagel - finishing seventh. Though the Wildcats held the top three spots, their fourth and fifth place runners finished 34th and 35th respectively to give Central Missouri State the victory.
The ACU Men dominated, however, with its top five runners finishing in the top eight spots. East Central University will join the Wildcats with a berth to nationals as the Tigers finished second with 63 place points.
Both ACU squads will have a week off before travelling to Pomona, Calif. to compete for the NCAA Division II National Championship. In 2004 the men finished third in nationals.
