Wildcats fall at buzzer, 66-64

ACU loses big second-half lead to fall to 1-3

AUSTIN -- Chavon Farmer hit a jumper with less than one second to play Wednesday night as St. Edward's rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit to beat ACU, 66-64, in a non-conference men's basketball game.

The Wildcats (1-3) led by as much as 51-36 with 10:32 to play, but couldn't seal the deal on their second win of the season.  The Wildcats' biggest nemesis in the loss was their inability to convert from the free throw line.  ACU hit just 17 of 32 free throws in the game (53.1 percent), including going just 12 of 23 from the stripe (52.2 percent) in the game's final 20 minutes.

ACU, though still led 60-56 with 1:50 to play before Shawn Weinstein converted on an old-fashioned three-point play to cut the lead to 60-59 with 1:39 to play.  After a Wildcat turnover in the backcourt, Cornelius Gilleylen hit a layup with 1:30 to play to give the Hilltoppers a 61-60 lead.

But Demarcquez Rembert hit a layup with 48 seconds to play to give the Wildcats a 62-61 lead.  That lead stood until Farmer hit a 3-pointer with 13 seconds to play to give the Hilltoppers a 64-62 lead.

ACU's Tiago Souza was fouled with three seconds to play, and he calmly hit both free throws to tie the game at 64-64.  But after a timeout, the Hilltoppers got the ball to Farmer, who hit the game-winning jumper at the buzzer.

The Wildcats were led by Norman Alexander, who had 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting (4 of 7 from 3-point range).  Will Alexander had 11 points and Souza had 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

ACU will return to action Saturday when it takes on defending Lone Star Conference champion Texas A&M-Commerce in an LSC crossover game at 4 p.m. in Commerce.
