ACU centerfielder only Wildcat named to squad

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Abilene Christian University senior outfielder Cody Cure was named on Saturday to the all-tournament team at the NCAA Division II South Central Region baseball tournament.

Cure -- the only Wildcat to make the team -- was 8 for 12 (.667) with three runs scored and two stolen bases in three games.  ACU won its first game in the tournament, beating Central Oklahoma 12-11 last Thursday, before falling to Delta State (17-2) and Central Oklahoma (2-0) last Friday to fall out of the tournament.

Defending national champion Delta State won the tournament on its home field, beating Central Oklahoma, 9-1, in the region championship game at Ferriss Field.  The Statesmen will begin defense of their national championship Saturday evening when they take on West Region champion Cal State-Chico.

Delta State placed catcher Craig Newton, second baseman Clay Smith, third baseman Norwood Taylor, shortstop Eric Patten, outfielder Brett Donahoo and pitcher Brad Lightsey on the all-tournament team with Newton earning MVP honors.  UCO first baseman Beau Sullivan, outfielder Matt Yost, designated hitter Branden Bacon and pitcher Chris Jones were also named to the squad, along with Cure.

The Wildcats finished the season at 42-1 on the season -- their seventh 40-win season in head coach Britt Bonneau's nine-year tenure -- and ranked No. 9 in the nation.
