ACU Debater Named Academic All-American

for immediate release April 13, 1998

Abilene Christian University student Virginia Milstead has been selected by the Cross Examination Debate Association to be a member of the Academic All-American Debate Team.

Milstead, senior English major from Moreno Valley, Calif., was one of only 30 individuals across the United States selected for this prestigious honor.

She is the daughter of Anne and Robert Milstead.

Selection to the Academic All-American Debate Team requires the student to excel in both scholarship and debate. Milstead has a 4.0 grade point average and is a Jack Pope Fellow. Named for the former Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court, ACU's Jack Pope Fellows program provides scholarships to outstanding students who demonstrate leadership and intend to pursue careers in public service. Students complete a 24-credit hour minor in public service and attend seminars with public servants from across the country.

Her debate honors include winning the Pi Kappa Delta National Novice Debate Championship in 1997.

This is the second consecutive year an ACU student has been named to the Academic All-American Debate Team. Last year, Mandy Wilkins of Kilgore, Texas, received this honor. Wilkins is now attending graduate school in communication at Emerson College in Boston.
