ACU Honors Alumnus Howard Justiss of Nashville

for immediate release January 28, 1998

Howard Justiss of Nashville, Tenn., has been selected to receive a 1997-98 Distinguished Alumni Citation from Abilene Christian University.

Justiss will be honored at a reception Sunday, March 1, from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Kirby-Justiss Center, 4555 Trousdale Dr., in Nashville. The award will be presented at 2:45 p.m.

The Distinguished Alumni Citation recognizes distinctive personal and professional achievement of ACU alumni who have merited the honor and praise of peers and colleagues. Four individuals will receive the honor this year, representing each college and one chosen at large. Justiss was chosen for the College of Arts and Sciences.

A 1937 graduate of ACU, Justiss is a pioneer in the development of childcare concepts during the last 50 years.

After working in various areas of child protective services for the states of Texas and Tennessee, Justiss developed the privately owned child placement agency, Agape Inc. The concept behind Agape is to treat the family dysfunction early enough so that the child can stay with its family.

Since the opening of his program in 1966, more than 4,000 people have been helped through foster care, adoption, maternity care, marriage and family counseling, child placement and other services. Other programs modeled after Agape have opened in cities across the South.

"Howard has dedicated his life to the care of children from dysfunctional families," said Charles Nelson, ACU musical artist-in-residence and a longtime friend, in nominating Justiss for the honor. "He has been successful in educating individuals, members of the Churches of Christ, and the general public to the needs of orphaned and abused children. His intelligence, driven by perseverance, directed by his dedication to and compassion for children, has made a significant difference in this world."
