Griggs Center Hosts Workshop for Community Leaders

Posted October 10, 2011

ACU’s Griggs Center for Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy hosted a regional workshop on Oct. 3 to train rural communities about how to provide or improve support for aspiring entrepreneurs. The Griggs Center partnered with the Texas Center for Rural Entrepreneurship to deliver the training.

Big Country leaders who were interested in providing more training for local entrepreneurs were invited to participate in the session.

The workshop was interactive and focused on creating or enhancing action plans for communities to move forward in entrepreneurial support and training. It also included a custom community assessment tool for attendees.

“We believe it is extremely important for communities to get involved with and encourage entrepreneurs in order for them to succeed. This event was designed to help enhance those efforts,” said Dr. Jim Litton, director of the Griggs Center.

The Griggs Center is a part of the West Texas Innovation Network (WTIN), a new regional collaboration established to promote entrepreneurship and provide additional resources to entrepreneurs throughout the Big Country.
Andres Alcantar, Commissioner of the Texas Workforce Commission, spoke at the event and presented a $200,000 check to WTIN. He also presented funds to the Big Country's community colleges to provide additional courses focused on entrepreneurship.

“One of the most beneficial economic development endeavors a community can undertake is providing training for people interested in launching business ventures,” said Litton.

The Griggs Center will also provide a two-day Entrepreneur Bootcamp for aspiring entrepreneurs on November 4 and 5.
