Former ACU business professor dies at 88

Martha MosierMartha Virginia Fike Mosier, associate professor emerita of management services, passed away at the age of 88 on Tuesday, July 22 at her home in Abilene.

Mosier, born in 1919 in Okemah, Okla., graduated from Arapaho High School in 1937. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford in 1940, and earned a master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1955.

In 1955, Mosier began her 30-year teaching career at Abilene Christian with her husband, Bert Eugene Mosier. She taught in the business department, while her husband was an instructor in Industrial Arts. She retired in 1985.

"Martha Mosier was one of our most beloved teachers, not only because she was a great teacher and cared earnestly about her students' learning, but also because she shared her love for others by her daily life of Christian service," said Dr. Robert D. Hunter, vice president emeritus at ACU.

During her 30 years of service to ACU, Mosier served on many committees, including athletics and admissions, and was the first female to be elected to the ACU Faculty Senate. She was a founding member of the Texas Business Education Association and was twice honored by the association as the outstanding teacher in District 14.

Mosier was also a life member of Delta Pi Epsilon, a national honor society of business professionals. She was a member of the Western Horizon Chapter of the Abilene Business Women's Association, served as ABWA president and was honored by the chapter as Woman of the Year in 1989.

Mosier's commitment to service also extended into the Abilene community, where she volunteered two morning each week at the Christian Service Center from her retirement in 1985 up until six weeks prior to her death.

"Not only will her children, Eddie Mosier and his sister, Dr. Virginia Mosier, rise up to call her blessed, but her countless friends will also cherish her memory in the same way," said Hunter.

Mosier is preceded in death by Bert, her husband of 35 years, and a brother, Charlie. She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Lou Mosier, her son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Martha Mosier, her grandson, Bennett Ryan Mosier, her granddaughter, Katie Elizabeth Mosier and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 24, 6-8 p.m. at the Elliot-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. in Abilene. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 25 at 11 a.m. at University Church of Christ in Abilene.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to the Bert and Martha Mosier Memorial Scholarship Fund, College of Education, Abilene Christian University, Abilene, TX 79699.
