ACU Theatre will once again engage audiences with heart-warming stories for the 2016-17 season with Man of La Mancha as the Homecoming Musical.
Former theatre faculty member Jesse Galvan will return as a guest director for Man of La Mancha. In recent years Galvan worked on numerous Broadway productions, including the Tony-winning production of Porgy and Bess and, most recently, On Your Feet, the story of Gloria and Emilio Estefan.
The coming season also features a premiere of After Zoey, an original musical by ACU’s own Adam Hester, professor of theatre. Hester received internal grants to create the musical and produce the workshop version in New York City last July. The musical became a family project as his daughter, Jenavene, created music; his son, Conrad, created lyrics; and his sister-in-law, Martha Vickers Heady, helped with lyrics and music. The show will premiere in Abilene as one of ACU Theatre’s fall musicals.
Here’s the complete schedule:
Fall Musical Premiere, After Zoey
Straight from a New York workshop production in 2015, this original musical tells the story of a 16-year-old dreamer navigating high school and a critical illness.
Homecoming Musical, Man of La Mancha
Inspired by a classic novel, this Broadway hit and winner of five Tony Awards will combine romance and heroism in the legend of Don Quixote.
Cornerstone Production, The Dream of the Burning Boy
This bittersweet story follows the lives of those left behind after the sudden death of a high school overachiever.
Winter Romance, To Gillian on her 37th Birthday
Family, wisdom and a little bit of humor combine in this critically acclaimed tale as a man struggles with grief two years after the death of his wife.
Studio Premiere, The Mountaintop
This story shows the raw, human side of Martin Luther King Jr. and takes place in the Lorraine Motel just hours before the civil rights leader was assassinated.
Spring Musical Comedy, Peter and the Starcatcher
This Tony Award-winning show, a prequel to Peter Pan, will take audiences to Neverland with music, imagination and more than 100 unforgettable characters.
Andro/Cles and the Lion
This family-friendly performance of an original play by Gary Varner will be part of his Children’s Theatre class.
New Play Workshop
Watch 2005 ACU theatre graduate Crystal Rae perform her 10-minute play, Daniel’s Having a Baby, her new play, Lamaryia, and her Biblical one-woman show.
This year’s annual fundraising event will feature ACU Theatre alumna Jasmin Richardson, who toured Japan recently in Dreamgirls, performing an evening of songs in a cabaret setting.
