Randy, Anda Brown named 2014 Young Alumni of the YearPosted January 10, 2014
Fort Worth couple Randy ('94, Pre-Med) and Anda Brown ('95, English Education), who minister to young people in the low-income Como neighborhood, have been named the 2014 Abilene Christian University Young Alumni of the Year.
The Browns serve as teachers and mentors for neighborhood children alongside their own children, immersing their Building, Uniting and Restoring Ministries in the life and culture of their neighbors.
“We’re just trying to listen to Jesus and obey,” Randy Brown said. “Whatever good comes out of all this will be from God, and we’re just thankful to be a part of it.”
The Browns will be honored at an Alumni Day luncheon on the ACU campus Sunday, Feb. 16, along with 2014 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Rick Atchley, minister of the Word at The Hills Church of Christ in North Richland Hills.
Randy Brown and Anda Adams were high school sweethearts in Midland before coming to ACU, marrying in 1993 while both were finishing their last year of college. He is a family practice physician, and she stays home to raise their seven children.
They felt God calling them to local ministry in the decade after their marriage. In 2005, the couple moved to the Como neighborhood, set up an Opportunity Camp for neighborhood children and began working with 10 boys for a mentoring program dubbed Dr. Brown’s Mighty Men.
“There are so many things that happened where it was so clear it was God,” Anda Brown said. “I’ve never regretted it because of the way the Lord brought us. It was still scary, but we both knew it was God.”
Abilene Christian University has recognized an alumna or alumnus under 40 for professional achievement and/or distinguished service each year since 1990. Recent honorees have included country artist Aaron Watson and Austin sports talk host and reporter Sean Adams.
