21st Annual Gutenberg Award Celebration

Posted October 16, 2013

Distinguished alumni of Abilene Christian University from as far away as
Singapore, New York and Chicago will be honored for their professional
achievements in broadcasting, advertising, public relations, and digital
marketing at the university’s 20th annual Gutenberg Award Celebration on
Thursday night.

Gary Hamilton (’04), recognizable on NBC, MTV and most recently as the New
York Yankees On-Camera Host, is one of three alumni who will receive a
handcrafted Gutenberg press during this year’s award Celebration. Elvin Ong
(’95) and Kate Vein (’99) will also receive this award and share stories
about their successes in leadership positions in communications and agency
work.

"I'm privileged to have known all three of this year's honorees since their
student years here," says Dr. Cheryl Bacon, chair of the Department of
Journalism and Mass Communication. "Each of them has taken leadership
roles, applying their education in global arenas. Through their work in
broadcasting, advertising, public relations and digital marketing, they
have distinguished themselves and honored the JMC department."

The Gutenberg Celebration has been an ACU tradition since 1982, when it was
established to honor outstanding JMC graduates. Bacon shares the process by
which Gutenberg Award recipients are chosen: "The faculty receives
nominations (from alumni and internally) each year. We work hard to keep
track of our alums and their achievements. Each spring, we consider
eligible alums and select a slate of honorees whose work demonstrates the
breadth of our programs and of the influence of JMC grads in the world
today."

This year's Gutenberg Celebration will take place on October 17 in the Hunter
Welcome Center. Current journalism students invited and encouraged to
attend with their pre-paid tickets. Individual tickets for other attendees
are $40 each.
