Alumna named young optometrist of the yearPosted August 06, 2013
The American Optometric Association (AOA) recently named alumna Sandra Fortenberry, O.D., the young optometrist of the year at the association’s annual conference. In less than 10 years as a practicing optometrist, Fortenberry has demonstrated leadership in serving the profession, her patients and her community.
Fortenberry is the director of continuing education and professional relations in San Antonio at the Rosenberg School of Optometry, University of the Incarnate Word, where she is also assistant professor of optometry. Additionally, Fortenberry is a full-time optometrist at her own practice in San Antonio. Fortenberry studied biology at ACU and frequently returns to campus to recruit undergraduates for optometry school.
“Dr. Fortenberry expressed interest to me in helping out ACU and the biology department.” says Dr. Jim Nichols, chair of the Department of Biology. “I subsequently asked her to serve on the biology department’s visiting committee and she has been a willing and positive contributor to that group. She impresses me as a bright and articulate young professional.”
After graduating from ACU, Fortenberry attended optometry school at the University of Houston, where she completed a community-based family practice residency. Along with her position at the Rosenberg School of Optometry, Fortenberry is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a member of the American Optometric Association, the Texas Optometric Association and the Bexar County Optometric Association.
