ACU to offer a master’s program in occupational therapyPosted June 14, 2013
ACU announces the creation of a new graduate program in the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition: the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy. Pending final approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE), ACU will offer the program beginning in Summer 2014.
ACU’s proposed M.S. in Occupational Therapy will be a unique 2-year 69-hour faith-based program. Students will gain hands-on instruction and experience during their fieldwork placements at local health care facilities.
“This new program plays to the university’s strength of being mission-driven, and that’s in line with what professionals in the therapy field should be all about,” says Dr. Joe Bell, chair of ACU’s department of Kinesiology and Nutrition. “Just as Christ showed compassion for the sick and injured, so occupational therapy students are called to show compassion to those with whom they come in contact.”
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Employment of occupational therapists is expected to increase 33 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations.”
The bureau says the median annual salary for occupational therapists is over $72,000. The Texas Occupation Therapy Association, meanwhile, says the demand for graduates will grow an outsize rate over the next five years.
“I am appreciative of our faculty’s vision and hard work, and proud that ACU is adding a mission-driven program that will attract high-performing students,” says Dr. Carley Dodd, dean of the university’s Graduate School.
Occupational Therapy is a highly competitive field. According to the Academic Programs Annual Data Report for Academic Year 2011-2012, just over one-quarter of students who apply are accepted into Occupational Therapy programs each year.
The deadline to submit applications for the new program is January 15, 2014.
