Alum awarded for Discovery Channel theme songPosted June 12, 2013
Brandon Kinder (’06) helped form the nationally-known band The Rocketboys while a student at ACU. Kinder's notoriety continues to grow: he was recently recognized for composing “Gold In These Hills,” the theme song for the Discovery Channel series “Bering Sea Gold.” The show documents the lives of divers who search the floor of the Alaskan ocean for gold.
Kinder was honored May 15 by Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) at its annual Film & TV Awards, held this year in Beverly Hills, Calif. BMI recognized composers of music featured in the past year’s top-grossing films, top-rated prime-time network television series and highest-ranking cable network programs. Kinder was awarded in BMI’s cable television music category.
(BMI is a “global leader in music rights management, [which] collects license fees from businesses that use music, which it distributes as royalties to songwriters, composers and music publishers,” according to their website.)
During Kinder’s years at Abilene Christian, he formed The Rocketboys with five other ACU students. During the winter of 2010-11, three members of the band left to pursue other endeavors. Kinder then released a solo EP under the name “The Wealthy West,” and wrote Bering Sea Gold's theme song.
Ultimately, the three remaining members of The Rocketboys (lead singer Kinder, keyboardist Justin Wiseman and bassist Josh Campbell) decided to continue their collaboration. The Rocketboys’ most recent album, “Build Anyway,” was released during the summer of 2012. This summer The Rocketboys will tour the country with Relient K and The Almost, two other Christian rock bands.
