Physics society earns national recognitionPosted March 25, 2013
ACU’s Department of Engineering and Physics is proud to announce the ACU Society of Physics Students (SPS) has earned an Outstanding Chapter Award from SPS National for 2011- 2012. Less than 10% of the SPS chapters nationwide – roughly one chapter per state – are selected for this honor.
The award is based on reports submitted by SPS chapters and examines the chapter’s depth and breadth of SPS activities such as physics research, public science outreach, physics tutoring programs, hosting and representation at physics meetings, providing social interaction for chapter members and participation in SPS programs.
“It is clear that the SPS at ACU makes a powerful impact on the lives of the students, the campus and the greater community,” according to the latest SPS report. The ACU SPS has received recognition eight years in a row and 11 out of the past 12 years.
“This recognition is a great reward for all the students' hard work encouraging science literacy and showing others how fun physics can be through their outreach to elementary schools and science forums," says Dr. Tim Head, assistant professor of engineering and physics. Head is co-advisor of the ACU SPS chapter as well as the SPS National Council representative for the Texas region. "I find it most impressive that our students have been such good and consistent leaders through the years, that we receive this award on a regular basis.”
According to the ACU SPS website, the chapter combines student interest in physics with a faith-based life. Its members tutor local high school students, host social events for members, hold weekly chapter meetings, and present at state, national and international conferences.
“It is important that our students see the bigger picture of how science and society interact, and find their place to contribute to both. Our SPS chapter helps students develop their understanding of what it means to participate in society and gives them avenues to educate and entertain others with exciting science demonstrations and discussions on deeper topics,” says Head.
